Bastogne 04-27-14

Today we bade our host good bye and left our quaint cottage in Bruges and headed south to Bastogne, Belgium.  This was the location of one of the fiercest battles of WWII.  The time was Christmas 1944.  We thought the war was nearing an end, but the German High Command had other ideas.  They launched a massive counter attack along the British and American lines.  They ran into a stumbling block when they came up against the 10th Armored of the U.S. Army.  The American forces were in dire straights when the weather cleared and Patton's 3rd Army was able to complete a forced march to Bastogne and relieve the beleaguered troops.  There is a great museum at Bastogne detailing this action.  It is told through the eyes of a U.S. Infantryman, a young lad from Bastogne, a young lass from there and a German Lt.  We had the opportunity to tour Bastogne today.

Larry & I grew up in Huxford, Alabama.  Tonight we are staying in a 12th century castle in Germany....a long way from Atmore, AL.

 This castle is the highest castle overlooking the Rhine River.  What a trip this has been.
